Hospital campus standby generation plant

Los Angeles, CA · 2 MW diesel + paralleling

A Level 1 standby plant for a regional hospital: two paralleled 1 MW gensets, closed-transition transfer and life-safety branch distribution to OR, ICU and imaging — certified to NFPA 110.

01Scope of Work

What we were engaged to build.

Two 1 MW standby gensets with synchronizing switchgear and automatic load-step sequencing.
Closed-transition transfer with soft-load controls for no-break switchover to utility.
Black-start capability and monthly load-bank testing for NFPA 110 Level 1 compliance.
Utility interlock and protective relaying (27/59/81/32/46) coordinated with the serving utility.
Dual-wall sub-base fuel tanks sized for 96 hours of rated standby operation.
Life-safety and critical branch distribution to OR, ICU and imaging suites per CEC Article 517.

03Solutions Deployed

The specific electrical solutions we used.

How each design decision solved a real constraint on this project — from redundancy and coordination to protection and commissioning.

01

Paralleled 1 MW gensets with load-demand

The paralleling gear runs one genset at light load and starts the second only when demand rises, so the plant avoids wet-stacking and the hospital never runs a 2 MW plant at 20% load.

02

Closed-transition, no-break transfer

The ATS synchronizes to utility before transferring back, so the switch is a no-break event — critical for imaging and anesthesia equipment that can’t ride a 10-second outage.

03

NFPA 110 Level 1 compliance program

Weekly inspections, monthly load-bank runs and annual full-load tests are documented to the NFPA 110 record, keeping the Level 1 classification that accreditors audit.

04

CEC 517 critical branch segregation

The critical and life-safety branches are on their own transfer switches and panels, so a fault on a non-essential branch can never take down the OR or ICU.
